Here is a great article about the iPad, and more generally, the emergence of user-friendly technology.
Personally, I have no problem with devices that make computing easier and more accessible, but I do have problems with Apple’s track record of user input technologies, from the iPhone’s touch screen keyboard to the iPod’s click wheel (for games) to just about every mouse device they have produced since the iMac.
But then I saw a shot of an iPad Keyboard Dock. Sold!
When it becomes available in Canada, that is.

A two-day workshop for authors who want to know how to get published and who want to understand the publishing process.
November 26-27, 2009
9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Learn
- how to prepare covering letters and book proposals that get results
- how to target the editor or agent who will be receptive to your writing
- the publishing process from manuscript to bookstore (and online)
- how to market your book
- the pros and cons of literary agents and self-publishing
- how to build your author profile and increase your sales
- what’s happening in Canadian publishing today
“For many authors, the financial lives of their books are often a complete mystery…[and] they have unrealistic sales and marketing expectations.”
A recent Writers’ Union of Canada/Quill & Quire survey revealed that writers have little understanding of, and high expectations from their publishers.
Our workshop introduces you to the basics of the financial arrangements and the sales and marketing decisions of publishers, and provides you with the strategies for improving the odds of your book getting published.
Workshop leader Cynthia Good is the former President and Publisher of Penguin Canada and current Director of the Creative Book Publishing Program at Humber College. Joining Cynthia will be Jennifer Murray, former Vice-President of Marketing, Penguin Books and Kids Can Press.
The workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (coffee and registration at 9:00) in room H105 at the Lakeshore Campus, located on Lake Shore Blvd. West at the foot of Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke.
Fee: $345.45

Allen has an exciting new author workshop planned for December 14, 2009 at a soon-to-be-announced downtown Toronto location. Taking Control of Your Content, Level I will be a full-day, hands-on session for any author who wants to learn how to set up a blog-based website. A complete walkthough will be provided for the following tasks:
- configuring a domain name
- setting up email addresses
- creating a database
- installing Wordpress on the server
- installing social networking plugins
- writing and editing posts
- and much more!
Computers will be provided, so participants will not need to bring one, but they will need access to an internet-enabled computer later in order to manage their sites. No software needs to be purchased as site management will be done through a web browser. The workshop fee includes one year of basic web hosting, and all participants will leave the session with a live, functional blog site.
This workshop is for authors who do not currently have a website, or who have an online blog without a dedicated domain name. A basic knowledge of the web is necessary for this workshop, and all participants will have to choose and purchase a domain name before the event.
